Sci-Fi Narrative

Background:

Social Distancing, Quarantine, and Isolation
Keep Your Distance to Slow the Spread

Social distancing, also called “physical distancing,” means keeping space between yourself and other people outside of your home. To practice social or physical distancing:
Stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) from other people
Do not gather in groups
Stay out of crowded places and avoid mass gatherings

A Social Distance

Problems & Solutions:

We’re not going back to normal
Social distancing is here to stay for much more than a few weeks. It will upend our way of life, in some ways forever.
To stop coronavirus we will need to radically change almost everything we do: how we work, exercise, socialize, shop, manage our health, educate our kids, take care of family members.
In the short term, this will be hugely damaging to businesses that rely on people coming together in large numbers: restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs, gyms, hotels, theaters, cinemas, art galleries, shopping malls, craft fairs, museums, musicians and other performers, sporting venues (and sports teams), conference venues (and conference producers), cruise lines, airlines, public transportation, private schools, day-care centers.

We’re Not Going Back to the Way Life Was Before
Thanks to the coronavirus, the future may arrive earlier than expected.

The best coronavirus quarantine memes: We’re bored to the point of delirium
As we enter day who-the-heck-knows of confinement, people are expressing their on-edge feelings of isolation in creative ways.

Synesthesia: history in the west

The numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. ... have been personified by me from childhood. 9 is a wonderful being of whom I felt almost afraid, 8 I took for his wife ... 7 again is masculine; 6, of no particular sex but gentle and straightforward. ... In this style the whole multiplication table consisted of the actions of living persons, whom I liked or disliked, and who had, though only vaguely, human forms. (Galton 1880a, 253)

(1) sound photisms—light, color, and form sensations, which are elicited through hearing;
(2) light phonisms—sound sensations, which are elicited through seeing;
(3) gustation photisms—color sensations for gustation perceptions;
(4) olfactory photisms—color sensations for olfactory perceptions;
(5) color and shape sensations for pain, heat, and tactile sensations; and
(6) color sensations for shapes.

[Forms] may be plausibly explained by the hypothesis of forgotten childhood-associations; and this probability is increased by the fact that such associations would be useful in learning the number series and in remembering dates. ... Musical color-hearing and some name- associations are explained in the same way. Color with the letters may also be accounted for by arbitrary and forgotten childhood-associations; but it is possible that the explanation in this case is primarily a cerebral one. In general, however, such color-associations are either useful or pleasant, so that even if their occasion be cerebral, their continuance, both in the individual and in the family, is largely due to attention and cultivation. (Calkins 1893a, 455)

Multi Sensory Design

Selecting the target expression

Conceptual exploration

Sensory exploration

Sensory Analysis

Multisensory mind map

User-interaction scenario

Model making

Multisensory presentation

Sensory Ethnography

In the 1980s and 1990s, an “anthropology of the senses” was established by the work of Classen (1993, 1998), Howes (1991, 2003, 2005), Stoller (1989, 1997), Feld (1982), and Feld and Basso (1996). Sensory studies have since expanded to include a cultural history of the senses (Classen 1993, 1998, 2012), the sensual revolution (Howes 2005), sensuous scholarship (Stoller 1997), sensuous geography (Rodaway 1995), a sociology of the senses (Synnott 1993; Vannini, Waskul, and Gottschalk 2012), the senses and perception (Ingold 2000), senses of place (Feld and Basso 1996), the sensorium of contemporary arts (Jones 2006), sensory architecture (Malnar and Vodvarka 2004), sensory ethnography (Pink 2004, 2009), and ways of sensing contemporary society (Howes and Classen 2013) among other studies. While acknowledging different challenges to sensory studies, these views champion a more multi-sensory orientation towards theory, cultural understanding and fieldwork practices.

Scholars regard human sensing as an interpretive process, and therefore explore the interactive ways that the senses are socially patterned within culture; how the senses are culturally ordered and variously ranked across cultures; and the ways in which the senses are linked to emotion, memory, and experience.

In Indian ceremonies, the sensual concept of rasa blends the tasting of food and beverage with pleasure, leading to a heightened emotional appreciation of the entire event. Food, along with enjoyment of the ceremony, is literally and metaphorically “tasted, ingested, and excreted” in a “snout-to-belly- to-bowel” mixing of intimacy and shared bodily substances among audience and performers (Schechner 2007:10).
These examples inform different modes of cultural perception, as culture-specific concepts and practices generate particular forms of social interaction for what is meaningful in life, how emotions are expressed, and how people should interact with material things.

Nevertheless, sensory anthropologists may inquire how these structured investigations might be contextualized and applied more holistically to everyday consumer situations. When, for instance, does everyday consumer enjoyment of a brand begin, and what are the sensory dimensions that subjectively lead to positive “peak experiences” (Privette 1983)? A sociologist recalls his total enjoyment of coffee as greater than any one, two or several isolated sensory cues that might be evaluated separately:

“I genuinely enjoy the total sensual experience of fresh-brewed morning coffee. The taste of coffee incorporates its smell, but the smell of the coffee I drink is quite different from the tantalizing aroma of brewing coffee, a scent that, in fact, seems to awaken my senses... I know that the smell of brewing coffee anticipates and lubricates how I both taste and smell coffee when I drink it... [T]he flavor of coffee also includes the feel of hot liquid. In the morning, it has to be hot. I occasionally enjoy iced coffee, but iced coffee would never satisfy me in the morning, regardless of environmental temperature. Even the weight and feel of the mug are significant. I find it hard to get a satisfying swig from those dainty, undersized, bourgeois espresso cups...” (Vannini et al. 2012:5).

In this instance, the taste, smell, weight and temperature of coffee, in addition to morning time, blend into a full sensual, contextual, and temporal coffee experience, not reducible to isolated variables in experimental design or laboratory settings. Applying contextual features to sensory inputs expands our knowledge of what perceptual features make a beverage enjoyable, and under what social situations they occur. Marketing researchers note in controlled studies that sensory interactions influence consumer visual perceptions, such that taller glasses appear bigger and to hold more liquid (Krishna 2012), or that the texture and feel of the glass impacts impressions of quality and taste (Krishna and Morrin 2008).

...consumer researchers of ritual have shifted their focus away from larger symbolic meanings in religion, cosmologies and belief systems to examine, instead, its everyday occurrence. Whether highly stylized, or casual and informal, Rook situates ritual as “expressive of symbolic activity” in everyday life (1985:252). Goffman’s “sociology of occasions” (1967:2) explores how rituals are performed in ordinary occasions and employed strategically to organize daily face-to-face social interactions.

Rituals are symbolic action “thick with sensory meaning” (Grimes 1995:965). Moreover, they arouse in the senses a particular quality that “awakens alertness” (Hsu 2008:439). Rituals are intentional sequences or series of behaviors that reformulate experience out of existing materials (Schechner 2002); and therefore may be examined here as situated practices that employ both sensory qualities and symbolic meaning to re-formulate a new sensory/symbolic order for participants.

Product Semantics

DeSForM(Design and semantics of form and movement)

Semiotics is the study of signs, and semantics is the study of their meaning. In product semantics, these linguistic concepts are used to describe design. Applied to design, the product is the sign, and it concerns how designers encode meaning into their products, and how they communicate with the user.
Product qualities are categorized in “physical”, “social” and “symbolic”. Physical qualities relate to function, form, size, motion, and material. Social qualities relate to forms of interactions, rites, conventions, and intersubjective relationships. Symbolic qualities relate to meanings, concepts, beliefs, symbols and signs ((Parsons, T., The social system, 1951).

Product semantics, the “study of the symbolic qualities of man-made forms in the context of their use, and application of this knowledge to industrial design” (Krippendorff and Butter, 1984) is an important challenge in product design.

Semantic differential method (SDM) (Osgood et al., 1957) consists in listing the semantic attributes of the product to analyze and carry out user-tests in which the user must assess the product according to these attributes. The attributes are often defined by pairs of antonymous adjectives which lie at either end of a qualitative scale.

Multidimensional scaling uses dissimilarity assessments to create a geometrical representation of the perceptual space related to a family of objects. This method, initially developed for psychometric analysis (Shepard et al., 1972), is a process whereby a distance matrix among a set of stimuli is translated into a representation of these stimuli within a perceptual space.
Starting in the 70s, Gros and Fischer developed the Offenbach theory of product language. In this theory semantics refers to how design explains what a product is, as well as their symbolic associations. They are named the indicating and symbol functions.

One of the first companies to actively apply product semantics was Philips in the 1980s. A successful product of this strategy was the “Rolling Radio”, where the designers focused on communicating its mobility with speaker grills shaped like moving soundwaves and a passing resemblance to a motorcycle.

The theory of affordance was developed independently from product semantics. The term was coined by psychologist James J. Gibson to refer to his theory that objects have intrinsic usability due to their physical properties, regardless of human interpretation.
However, affordance did not originally refer to product design; Donald Norman appropriated and popularized the term for use in design with his work The Design of Everyday Things originally published in 1988. While Norman, a cognitive psychologist, worked with Gibson, he proposes an alternative definition. Norman’s view differs from Gibson’s in that it is the relationship between the object’s innate characteristics and the user’s capabilities and experiences that determines how the object can be used.

The research, which was led by author Giada Brianza from the University of Sussex, UK, claims that the smell or fragrance can influence the images we have in our mind related to our body.
The human sense of smell is so strong that it is often used to treat other ailments in the body. “For mental, physical and spiritual purposes, our ancestors have been using aroma therapy to heal related ailments and disorders. So for us smell and its related impact on our body and emotions are not new. These researches can only strengthen these old therapies,” highlights Dr Jaitly.

Google researchers are training neural networks with a new technique to predict how a molecule smells based on its chemical structure.
The science of smell lags behind many other fields. Light, for example, has been understood for centuries. In the 17th century, Isaac Newton used prisms to divide the white light of the sun into our now familiar red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet rainbow. Subsequent research revealed that what we perceive as different colors are actually different wavelengths. Glance at a color wheel and you get a simple representation of how those wavelengths compare, the longer reds and yellows transitioning into the shorter blues and purples. But smell has no such guide.
If wavelengths are the basic components of light, molecules are the building blocks of scents. When they get into our noses, those molecules interact with receptors that send signals to a small part of our brains called the olfactory bulb. Suddenly we think “mmm, popcorn!” Scientists can look at a wavelength and know what color it will look like, but they can’t do the same for molecules and smell.

Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, in a groundbreaking hunt to map the origins of humans' sense of smell, have found that olfaction relies on multiple regions of the brain — many undiscovered — and is far more complex than previously thought.
“We are in the 21st century and we still don’t really understand the sense of smell,” said Dr. Florin Albeanu, whose research paper, published this week in the journal Nature Neuroscience, challenges prevailing wisdom and poses new questions.
“Olfactory experience is very subjective,”said Alexei Koulakov, also a neuroscientist at Cold Spring Harbor Lab.
“The perception of smells actually depends on the context and on an individual’s prior experience," Koulakov said.

You Will Never Smell My World the Way I Do
“We’re all smelling things a little bit differently,” said Steven Munger, director of The Center for Smell and Taste at the University of Florida.
“Olfaction is the most important sense for the rest of the animal kingdom,” said Dr. Lomvardas. And though its essential role is less obvious when humans don’t have to sniff out their next meal, it still affects much more than just perfume preference and flavor experience. There is evidence that reduced sense of smell has psychological consequences, he said, and it may offer early clues of an oncoming neurodegenerative disorder such as Alzheimer's disease.
Of course, genes are not the only determinant of scent. Rachel Herz, who studies the psychological science of smell at Brown University, calls this new study “great and important” but points out that there are many other factors at play, including attention, past associations and expectations.
“There’s also an ability to create odor illusions and flip people’s perception of an odor,” she said. She’s done this by presenting people with a chemical combination and telling them that it’s vomit. She then presented the same chemical combination and told them it was Parmesan cheese. The participants refused to believe that the samples were the same, she said, as one was so clearly disgusting and the other was so clearly delicious.

Your nose knows more than scientists thought
Poor human olfaction is a 19th-century myth
You’ve probably heard that your sense of smell isn’t that great. After all, compared with a dog or even a mouse, the human olfactory system doesn’t take up that much space. And when was the last time you went sniffing the ground alongside your canine companion? But now, in a new review published today in Science, neuroscientist John McGann of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, argues that the myth of the nonessential nose is a huge mistake—one that has led scientists to neglect research in a critical and mysterious part of our minds.
Every sense is unique and has its own quirks, bugs, and features in the human brain. One of the things that makes smell distinctive is that olfactory information is not rooted through this “switchboard” structure called the thalamus on the way to other “thinking” brain regions. It goes from the nose to the olfactory bulb and then directly from there to the olfactory [processing area] but also to places like the amygdala and the hippocampal formation, which are involved in emotion and memory. It’s a very common experience to have smells evoke strong memories. It's been speculated that that might be related to the different wiring.
Another [factor] is that the nature of smell is very synthetic. Most smells in the real world are mixtures of lots of chemicals. A cup of coffee has about 150 different chemicals … that you can smell. But you don't have 150 dimensional perceptions—you just smell coffee. You can't really think of it or label it quite as easily as you can describe the [sight of the] cup that the coffee is in or the music that's playing in the background.

Jan. 2015 Asifa Majid awarded Ammodo KNAW Award 2015 for Humanities

Innovative fieldwork carried out by Majid has undermined such dogmas. She discovered that small nomadic people in the rainforests of Thailand and Malaysia certainly appear to have a large abstract smell vocabulary, which they apply just as consistently as their colour vocabulary. Perhaps human beings do have the potential to develop a rich scent language, but that potential is not used where odour is less important for survival and, unlike in the rainforest, it is not necessary to pass on such language to children.

In addition to fieldwork, Majid is also actively engaged in lab work. ‘I’m very enthusiastic about a new study among wine and coffee experts. I’d really like to determine what makes someone an expert. And whether this is reflected in their language use pertaining to taste and smell.’ She would also like to conduct research into perfume experts. ‘Unfortunately, they are few and far between.’

Olfactory Diary

1. Background:

Smell is a potent wizard.-Helen Keller

2. Olfactory Design
‘My Body Odor’
